WTF MUSICK NEWS

WHATS UP NATION!?

It’s been a long time but that’s because I have been working my dear friend Bill Manspeaker of the comedy punk rock band GREEN JELLO to help develop his own internet channel where I will be doing a new daily show called WTF MUSICK NEWS.

WTF Musick News

This is a musical satire show that picks up where MTV left off and my character (Justan Fanboi) talks about some of the news in the music industry that just makes you go WTF!? As well as taking jabs at internet trolls but still talk about some good news within the music world. It airs live every day a 9 PM East Coast Time and you can watch it on the Green Jello Facebook Page. Great things are on the rise and I want to take you all with me. Be sure to give the page a like and be sure to tune in every night. Until next time Nation STAY LOUD! \m/ \m/

VR Concerts?

WHATS UP NATION!?

OK I recently came across an article about VR Concerts. Now for the uninitiated VR stands for Virtual Reality. Its the new trend thats in the entertainment world and it brings the action of (for example) a video game closer. You get to see through the eyes of the character and is often times in 3-D. You can get a full on 360 degree view of the area your character is in. Plus this new technology is now being put into apps.  You can play a shooting game or go on a diving simulator. I personally have one for my phone and its amazing but now there is talk about adding concerts to this and to be honest…I’m not sure if this is good or bad. Festival tours have been reduced to 1 city, weekend, shows and this would bring them closer to the concert experience.

That being said I have no telling if you’ll get a full view of the stage? How far back from the stage will the view be? Will the sound quality be any good? What if there’s buffering issues? So as of right now it’s too soon to tell. I have not had a chance to test something like this out but i’d say its worth giving it a chance. I personally prefer being there but I do know that trying to make it to these shows has become rather difficult. Full weekend tickets are at least three figures and there’s travel, food, lodging, parking and if you have any money left over, a souvenir. So this would be a good way to get closer to the experience. So lets see what happens and until next Nation…STAY LOUD!

HAPPY NEW YEAR (DIO Hologram Tour?)

WHATS UP NATION!?

2016 has finally come to an end and we sadly lost a lot of people but thats all behind us. Let us look to the future with an open mind and commit to our new years resolution. Like mine is to get healthy and be more active with my website. So lets start with some interesting news. Remember the Ronnie James DIO hologram at Wacken Open Air? Well he just might be going on tour. Now a lot of you might be thinking that’s lame, or its exploiting his image, or any other negative term you can think of but me?……Im ok with this.

I used to think that doing something like this would exploit the entertainer until a friend of mine asked me “how is it any different from a tribute band”? And I had no good answer for him. Thats when I started re think every negative thing that has been said about this and I think we’ve been over reacting. I wasn’t lucky enough to see DIO when he was still alive. So something like this will be the best way to experience his show and the music itself would still be live. Plus I don’t know if he had stage theatrics but if he did this would be a great way to experience them. So don’t look at it like a concert. Think of it as seeing a spectacle and a chance to experience what we missed out on. You can read more about it HERE. Welcome to 2017 and until next time nation STAY LOUD!

SPOOKY EMPIRE

WHATS UP NATION!?

This is The Concert Cruizer and just last weekend I attended a horror convention called Spooky Empire’s Ultimate Horror Weekend in Orlando Florida.

The convention was actually canceled earlier this year due to Hurricane Mathew but the organizers managed to reschedule it and got most of the original guests back (including the cast of STRANGER THINGS). What I was surprised to see was a decent number Musical Celebrities which I LOVE. Meeting musicians at cons is a much better experience then a concert. You actually have more time to talk to them rather then it being a 2 second meet and greet. Plus get a decent selfie or a professional photo op. Plus your indoors, you don’t have to worry about the weather, you can bring your own thing to get signed, you can party with them and its pretty well organized.

The first person I got to meet was The Parody King WEIRD AL YANKOVIC

I think he likes me

I think he likes me

I have been waiting years to meet him and I had a couple of Christmas Presents for him that I wrapped in Aluminum Foil. I expected him to just rip it apart but no. He slowly unfolds it like an old man and says “there’s now chewed gum in here right”? Laughing I said no its a real gift and it was a dog tag of his character from My Little Pony Cheese Sandwich. Now before I went into the next gift I had to tell him the story behind it. I said: Now AL this next one is from someone you and I both know. This man has taken me under his wing, he taught me how to make a video and he and his wife have stayed at my house on more then one occasion. I asked him to make this so I can give it to you when I saw you in concert in Buffalo NY. I waited out back of the venue for hours and (gave a serious look) you bailed and I have been waiting YEARS to give this to you. So here you are. Once again he slowly unwraps it and said he was gonna save the foil for later and sees this.

Green Jello SUXX

Green Jello SUXX

I open my sweater, reveal the Green Jello shirt and go “Bill Says Hi”. He thanked me for the picture but I don’t think he believed me that I knew the singer and found of Green Jello Bill Manspeaker. So played him a video of Bill saying hello to AL and confirming that we are in fact friends. Thats when AL went OH WOW! YOU DO KNOW HIM! He told me about when he was invited over to Bill’s place for his son’s birthday parties and how he used his office at Green Jello Studios to shoot an episode of AL TV. As I left he said “Hey give my regards to Bill and tell him that Green Jello….STILL SUXX! Meeting AL was everything I hoped it would be. He was funny, not one snob bone in his body and the other cool part, was that his manager and director of his movie UHF Jay Levey was there.

I remember seeing a clip of him telling people he manages Weird Al and then he goes what do you mean thats too bad?

Another music legend I got to meet was DAVE ELLEFSON from MEGADETH.

Dave apparently has his own brand of coffee and if drank the stuff I'm sure I would have bought that to.

Dave was such a gem to meet. If you couldn’t afford to buy anything but just wanted to say hello. He had no problem shaking your hand and just chat with you (you would NEVER get something like that at a concert). Aside from having photos to sell he also had an array of guitar picks which again is so great. If you have ever been front row at a concert. You know that people will dive for that stuff like zombies on a body and while that maybe free it’s still just a chance and risky. Here you could buy them and he even had RARE ones and in the pick collecting community THOSE are treasure.

They also had Bobby Steele from THE MISFITS and THE UNDEAD.

I had spent my last dollar so this person is my dear friend Austin Horenkamp.

I had spent my last dollar so this person is my dear friend Austin Horenkamp.

What I liked about was, he was just as approachable as everyone else I have mentioned but his stuff was fairly priced. Sometimes this stuff can get pretty expensive and rightfully so. I mean if they had Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath and he was charging $100…..yeah you can get why. And while Bobby IS A LEGEND in the Punk Scene, he was not charging an arm and leg for his autograph and photo op (and now I am kicking myself in the ass for not getting his). But I had such a great time hanging out with him. We were telling jokes, I was doing magic tricks and he dragged other people over for me to show them off to other people and I hope I will have a chance to meet him again.

Now this last person I was skeptical about meeting because I had met him before and he was kinda stand offish but it was KERRY KING from SLAYER.

This photo was taken at the Mayhem Festival so I didn't feel the the need to buy his photo op or autograph again.

This photo was taken at the Mayhem Festival so I didn’t feel the the need to buy his photo op or autograph again.

When I met him back in 2012 Kerry was rather quiet, he didn’t talk very much, and didn’t seem like he wanted to be there. That being said I figured I should go up to him and thank him for coming because he wasn’t part of the original line up and he still wanted to be apart of Spooky Empire. So I walk up and say hello and I gotta tell you…that was not the same man I spoke to back in 2012. He was all smiles, he was happy to be there, we were talking about how Mayhem 2012 was my first time seeing SLAYER, the theatrics of shock rock, the band Rammstein and then I found out that at the VIP reception he was drinking with everybody, he was very approachable and social with all of their attendees. So I OFFICIALLY take back everything I have ever said about. It was a really pleasure meeting you again Mr. King.

I hope one day musicians will get a convention of their very own. Yeah there N.A.M.M but thats really more of a vendors fair. It’s not an actual convention like this. Hell there were people cosplaying as the band GHOST! Iv even seen people cosplay as other well known metal musicians in various other  cons and if this continues, hopefully music will be nerdy again. If your interested in going to Spooky Empire then please head over to www.spookyempire.com and until next time nation…STAY LOUD!

KORN: The Serenity of Suffering

WHAT’S UP NATION!?

OK I have been meaning to give you my thoughts on the new Korn album “The Serenity of Suffering”. Seeing how I wasn’t that impressed with it debut single ROTTING IN VAIN. Well I have heard the whole album and all I have to say is….I am SO HAPPY to be proven wrong.

Korn: Serenity of Suffering

This album is fantastic. The first thing I noticed is that it seemed like a combination of FOLLOW THE LEADER and ISSUES and with having Brain “HEAD” Welch back and the advance style of drummer Ray Luzier, it’s like a new take on their old style. So it’s a great combination of old and new.

Second thing was how much differently Rotting In Vain sounds. It quickly grew on me and thats when  I realized. Music (especially heavy metal) is meant to be heard through a decent sound system. Don’t ever critique a song like this through computer speaker or cheap ear buds. Otherwise you will not get the full effect. Listening to it in my car I was able to hear (and feel) the emotion of the song much more clearer  and vocalist Jonathan Davis can still pack a punch with his screaming vocals.

And finally, it has the perfect balance of heaviness and melodic. I hate it when metal bands are heavy just for the sake of being heavy. On this album Korn hits the nail on the head with knowing when to crank up the distortion, the proper effect setting to achieve the right reaction, and even sings lightly during heavy parts without it feeling so out of place. This is perhaps one of the best albums I have heard all year. While I fully supported them from See You On The Other Side (which is a HIGHLY underrated album) to The Paradigm Shift. It’s hearing hem return to a similar sounds but still keeps it fresh. With that in mind I give this album a solid 9 out of 10! Go pick it up and you wont be disappointed. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and until next time nation. STAY LOUD!

R.I.P Pete Burns

Greetings Nation,

I am sad to report that singer PETE BURNS from Dead or Alive has passed away from a heart attack. He was only 57 year’s old. Pete and his band were known for their smash hit You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) and while they are commonly referred to as One Hit Wonders. Pete had a steady career hosting British Reality shows. I personally never seen them but people found him enjoyably bitchy and he manage to bring a lot of joy to viewers. And his fans will miss him.

Hidden Gems: Musick To Insult Your Intelligence By

WHAT’S UP NATION!?

Every now and then I would wonder through a used CD store, research a band’s discography, or hear something interesting on Spotify that catches me off guard. Something I didn’t know existed and it deserves attention. So today we’re gonna look at the Green Jello’s third album “Musick To Insult Your Intelligence By”.

Musick To Insult Your Intelligence By

This album features most of the original line up from both of their previous albums (The Cereal Killer Soundtrack and 333) and contained a whole new array of characters including  geek girl, a Rabbi, Scroty the Clown, and many more. The album as a whole feels like a combination of their previous two records and opens with a song called “Sugar & Spice” The beginning alone sounds like they went back to their roots of sounding comically awful, while still taking it to the next level. The song itself is a take on the old nursery rhyme of Sugar & Spice and Everything Nice and turns it into a full fledged song.

The next song is probably my favorite. It’s called  ”GEFILTE FISH ” and it is a punk rock parody of Marylin Manson’s The Beautiful People. I love this song, I have seen Marylin Manson twice and he’s always known for his shock rock antics but this song takes what he’s known for and turns into a Kosher Joke. It’s hilarious, it’s fantastic and I wish there was a music video for it (more on that later).

Stabby The Clown you can tell was made to be a performance piece. Its about a Freak Show performer who goes by that name and tells about his adventures. Again I WISH there was a music video for this. Another good one is I WILL NOT. Im not entirely sure what the joke of this song is but apparently it’s some kind of a play on words. Regardless it’s still a great punk song. The opening bass line has a nice groove to it and the gravely vocals works very well with the instrumentation.

So if the album is this good then why haven’t you heard of it? Turns the label didn’t give Bill any money for video or a tour. I don’t think the label even really promoted it. From what I can tell he just threw the album up on eBay and online music stores. Bill doesn’t even sell copies of it at his show. In fact he encourages people to illegally download it saying “if he’s not gonna make any money. Then neither will they”. So you have Bill Manspeaker’s permission to go the youtube links I have posted and download his unheard album for free and hopefully more people will know about this amazing unheard album. That’s it for now nation and until next time. STAY LOUD!!!

Spotify and Discoveries

WHATS UP NATION!?,

As of late I have to admit. Music hasn’t been capturing my interests lately. There’s a huge over saturation of the same sound and metal has become so boring to me. I grew up in the 90s when radio was thriving and that’s where you’d get all your new music from. Now it’s a thing of the past. My local rock radio station is gone, most stations don’t have a DJ (or a personality), and they play the same thing over and over again. I have resisted online music streaming for so long but I finally caved in and decided to try Spotify. And so far it’s not been a bad experience. It has introduced me to various types of rock and metal that you know would not be played on any American radio station (probably not even Satellite Radio).

Like I found this play list of FOLK METAL. This certainly raised my brows with interest so I gave it a listen. Most of what I heard definitely had layers and textures of Folk but none of it gave me that feeling of wanting to get up, throw my first in the air and roar. But then I came across a band called WINTER STORM and their song THROUGH THE STORM and THIS IS WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. Not only does it give me that feeling of excitement but this one song along gave me a sense of  an adventure, of a battle, of brave warriors on the march. All feelings that most songs today don’t give me. As you get older you become harder and harder to impress but these guys impressed me. Be sure to click the links above to check them out for yourself and if your going to use a service like Spotify. Do the bands and artist a solid and buy their music to keep them and musical artistry alive. So until next time Nation STAY LOUD \m/\m/

METALLICA: HARD WIRE

WHAT’S UP NATION!?

I just got back from Tampa and whats the first thing I see?…..NEW METALLICA!!! Yes the first single HARD WIRED off they’re new upcoming album “HARD WIRED…TO SELF DESTRUCT”. So I gave it a listen and this is my FIRST IMPRESSION (I need to let it sink in a bit more). If feels like St. Anger but done write. The riffs sound like they came from that album but the production is better, the running time is shorter, has guitar solos and no snares. Now keep in mind this is just my first impression and its only this one song. I have not heard the rest of the album but first impressions are good. Give it a listen and hear it for yourself. ROCK ON \m/
